Crisis Communications for Property Developers: A Practical Guide

Planning delays, construction issues, neighbour objections — property developments generate crises. Here's how to manage them without derailing your sales programme.

20 October 2025

Property developments inevitably encounter crises — planning disputes, construction delays, neighbour objections, legal challenges or reputational issues involving individuals connected to a scheme. How a developer responds to these situations determines whether a crisis becomes a temporary setback or a lasting reputational problem that damages sales.

The first principle of property crisis communications is speed. In a world where news travels instantly, delay in responding allows the narrative to be set by others — usually those with interests adverse to the developer. Establishing a communications protocol before a crisis occurs — identifying who speaks, what channels are used and what messages can be cleared quickly — is essential preparation.

The second principle is proportionality. Not every planning application objection or construction incident requires a press conference. Calibrating response to the genuine reach and severity of a story is as important as responding at all. An overreaction that draws media attention to an issue that would otherwise have passed unnoticed is as damaging as under-response.
